Day 27: First DVD Purchased

That I purchased? I think the first DVD for myself was The Phantom Menace. I didn't buy it, but it's one of the earliest DVDs I remember getting for me. The movie I think has gotten a lot more flack than it should have. It's certainly not good, it's just very average and, if comparing to the original trilogy, than yeah, it REALLY sucks. Anakin is played terribly, Jar Jar is a mess, but there's a really interesting story hidden under there. If Lucas hadn't been so overly protective and tyrannical, the film could have been quite excellent.
I have a lot of good memories from the summer of 1999, when this first came out. That year was a really excellent summer. I'll always look back on this movie fondly because of it.

  1. for as much criticism as this movie got, I actually saw this before I ever saw the original trilogy and maybe that's why I enjoyed it, but I really don't see anything wrong with the new movies.

Yeah, Anakin could get REALLY annoying.. to be honest, I hated Anakin WAY more than I ever hated Jar Jar.. in fact, when I was younger & even still now, I liked Jar Jar. I found him funny and amusing. Nowadays I prefer R2D2 & C3PO over Binks, but I still don't hate him.

I always had a problem with Han Solo type of characters which I think is why I didn't like the original THAT much.. hence why I dislike James Bond & Indiana Jones. But that's a whole other issue entirely..

I love Star Wars though because I have a lot of good memories associated with it, which is why you got an essay rather than a one-liner :D

  2. ... You like Jar Jar. I've yet to meet a person that actually likes him. But good on you! (Tumblr has caused me to believe I can put a gif anywhere. Damn you Tumblr!)
It's just painful to watch Anakin because he's such a "what could have been" case. He's the central character for the entire saga, and Lucas couldn't find a better actor? Sigh.
Han Solo is a loveable rogue, so naturally he won't fit everyone.
Also, your longest comment on any of my movie posts. I am impressed. You should go read my post actually about the entire Star Wars saga though under favorite sci-fi movie.

  3. I believe I did read it! I just unleashed all my kept emotions about the saga for this one because I'm in an exceptionally good mood after consuming 6 taco bell tacos :D

As a child & even now, I like the characters no one else likes :D I'm a hipster in that aspect, I suppose, but I like these characters not for irony, but because I genuinely find them funny!

I thought Hayden Christensen did an adequate job.. I could never quite get on board with the whole Anakin/Padme relationship because the age gap BLEW MY MIND as a kid or even the fact that him turning to the dark side would magically save her from death, but then again, maybe I'd make a poor choice to save who I cared about too!

I feel weird for not liking the lovable rogue.. it would seem like I would, but I just don't. If anything, I'd be more embarrassed to tell people I dislike Han than to tell them that I like Jar Jar (if that makes sense..)

  4. Oh God, so many tacos.
Different strokes for different folks, I suppose.
Yeah that age gap was too much and also... he was just so wooden, I could never really appreciate him. I wanted a Mark Hamill level of acting, that would've been better. I do like the prequels (except for AOTC), but they just could have been epic. At least I don't say they ruined my childhood or anything lol.
Yeah, that would make sense. Probably keep that on the dl.

  5. I will forever keep my secret, especially since I'm friends with many a Star Wars fan and I wouldn't want to lose any friendships!!

I don't think you ever played Batman: Arkham Asylum, but after seeing it played, I respect Mark Hamill so much now <3 much more than I did when I saw him in Star Wars, but then again, I only ever saw him in the series and not elsewhere, causing me to think he was a one-trick pony, but I was proven wrong!

  6. Definitely keep that a secret. You could get exiled D-:
I haven't but I know that the fandom rejoiced when they heard he'd do the Joker's voice. He is very talented.

  7. SO TALENTED. If I didn't love Joker's character before, I definitely do now :D

  9. If we hadn't, George Lucas would have jumped into the conversation!!!
